In honor of International Women’s Day—what an amazing way to spend Saturday: marching through Washington, DC in a drumline for women’s rights in solidarity with our Iranian friends!🥁

I’ll never forget when one of my Iranian girlfriends told me how her family fled Iran when she was a child. I remember thinking, “I can’t imagine being afraid of my own government—we are so fortunate.” 🫣

While many of us worry about rights being rolled back here, it’s a reminder that women in other parts of the world are still fighting for the most basic freedoms.

I have so much admiration for all my immigrant friends who escaped oppressive regimes, helped their families navigate life in America (often translating and taking on adult responsibilities as kids), and grew into some of the most incredible humans I know. 🥰

Shoutout to everyone who made my drumline dreams come true—especially @trumpet_brian and @allamericanbrass! (…and the golf cart angels who offered me a ride back up the hill post- march…MVPS! 😂🙏)

As we roll into this Lunar New Year (Fire Horse), this is the only kind of fun, creative, supportive energy I’m claiming for the year ahead. A lot sure has changed in a year 🥴— And we really do get by with a little help from our friends!

This Valentine’s Day also marks 13 years (to the day) of my hEDS diagnosis—when all the puzzle pieces finally formed a constellation. At the time, I couldn’t sing or play instruments, and EDS was considered rare (1 in 500,000). There were no roadmaps, no guides—just community we were forming, niche providers who cared, and those of us willing to go forth into the unknown.

Leadership then didn’t mean having followers; it just meant going first. It meant making mistakes, re directing, and realizing there was no magic “cure- all” pill we could take…

This month marks the first February (Rare Disease Awareness Month) in my life that hEDS is no longer classified as RARE… Current research suggests it affects closer to 1 in 500! While the subtypes still are, I’d like to think the footprints we left have still made the terrain a little easier to follow; that alone gives purpose to our pain.

I wouldn’t be here—still truckin’ and back to making music despite the long road to improvement ahead—without family, community, and creative friendships like these! So as we say in Spanish, Feliz Día de Amor y Amistad—celebrating all forms of love, not just the romantic kind! 😉

Love is the force that propels us forward with that Fire Horse momentum! And as the great philosopher (Bad Bunny 🐰 of course) once said:
“If we Fight, we have to do it with Love!” ❤️

Thank you all for still being here, and fighting for love and humanity. Because of you, I am too. 🙏

This Valentine’s Day also marks 13 years (to the day) of my hEDS diagnosis—when all the puzzle pieces finally formed a constellation. At the time, I couldn’t sing or play instruments, and EDS was considered rare (1 in 500,000). There were no roadmaps, no guides—just community we were forming, niche providers who cared, and those of us willing to go forth into the unknown.

Leadership then didn’t mean having followers; it just meant going first. It meant making mistakes, re directing, and realizing there was no magic “cure- all” pill we could take…

This month marks the first February (Rare Disease Awareness Month) in my life that hEDS is no longer classified as RARE… Current research suggests it affects closer to 1 in 500! While the subtypes still are, I’d like to think the footprints we left have still made the terrain a little easier to follow; that alone gives purpose to our pain.

I wouldn’t be here—still truckin’ and back to making music despite the long road to improvement ahead—without family, community, and creative friendships like these! So as we say in Spanish, Feliz Día de Amor y Amistad—celebrating all forms of love, not just the romantic kind! 😉

Love is the force that propels us forward with that Fire Horse momentum! And as the great philosopher (Bad Bunny 🐰 of course) once said:
“If we Fight, we have to do it with Love!” ❤️

Grateful for collabs with other músicos in our community like @dr.deepgrooves 🎹; several of us grew up in non-Spanish speaking homes and learned the language of our own volition to expand our inner worlds & build bridges across cultures!

I got so caught up in the 🎶 Glory of Old IU winning the National Championship that I neglected linear time—and have yet to wish my dear friend @darius.m.scott a very happy (belated) birthday!

Whether he’s dazzling us on keys, sharing hilarious run-ins with famous musicians/comedians, or demonstrating value-added synergies, one thing’s for sure… he must regret showing me the corporate jargon generator 😂 (pretty sure Fernando Mendoza has used it in a post-game victory speech or two).

Happy birthday to one of my favorite musical friends and a true cornerstone of our jazz world. Loved his solo—and the incredible band support on “I’ll Remember April” (sung in honor of two Events Team members both named April 😂). One of them even took these photos from the Center Club’s Jazzy Holiday Brunch we had the honor of playing—so enjoy, and hope it was an amazing birthday, Young Darius! 🎉🎶

Weeks before football season, I arrived at IU for the 1st time since graduation with one of my fav Bmore girlies — to finally take jazz classes with incredible IU faculty/alum after the missed opportunity in college(I maxed out my alotted music school credits as a non-music major 😂 ) + revisit the old stomping grounds. @iamsherrigoodall wanted to see her dad’s founding fraternity—one of the earliest Black fraternities in the country ❤️—which ended up being right across from my sorority…Alignment 🙌!

Fast-forward to today: IU wins its FIRST National Championship… in football?! I believe our full-circle summer moment healed an unknown rip in the space-time continuum…

Like many of us, IU’s QB (Fernando Mendoza), is a grandchild of immigrants…..AND he just led the Hoosiers to their 1ST perfect season and 1ST national title in the most “American” of sports. Part of his Heisman Trophy Acceptance speech was in Spanish to honor his family/roots/fan base.

When division is the agenda, sports and music remain radical spaces of unity and connection.. We can’t forget how far we’ve come—or that this country was built by immigrants. We are the melting pot, comprised of the cultures we carry from our homelands….which we are meant to have the freedom to share & celebrate…
REMEMBER ?!!!! 👀

WWIII is a Spiritual War my friends. As it is already underway, let our IU fight song remind us:

Great Question! Breathwork through music is a great way to channel the stress of uncertainty; try dedicating a song to the other team! 💁‍♀️ Here’s a little tune you may know that I dedicated to the Packers last week… 🐔..

Humming or singing Bears-related songs is also great for calming the Vegas Nerve the autonomic nervous system. (We are no longer yelling at the tv now that we are protecting our vocal cords)!

There are many quantum Bears theories—like the 2016 Cubs World Series win opened a space-time rift that only the Bears can close to reverse the current world chaos.

I’ll add one: this synthetic tenor reed gifted to me by Todd Marcus on my birthday, allegedly has healing powers 😂…we didn’t know if it would work on an alto sax but alas, a miracle! That birthday was also the 4 decade anniversary of my birth ON Mike Ditka’s birthday… the year the Bears last won the Super Bowl… another miracle!
